If you love to dance, consider trying out for our team!
HARD WORK, LOVING WHAT YOU DO, AND GREAT FRIENDSHIPS
During tryouts, potential team members will perform the tryout dance for the judges. Each candidate will also be required to show the judges a double pirouette, a calypso, a split leap, and a turn and leap of her choice. If you don't know what these things are, you can search for them on Youtube (there are tons of great instructional videos for dance skills). Wear shorts, a t-shirt, and jazz shoes (if you have them) to the learning clinics. For tryouts, you must wear dark (black or dark blue) shorts, a white t-shirt (no writing on either shirt or shorts) and jazz shoes (or other dance shoes if you don't have jazz shoes... tennis shoes work too).
It's easier said than done, but try not to be nervous. Just do your best, and show the judges what you've got. Even if you make a mistake, keep smiling and dance with confidence. Showmanship is a huge part of dancing for a crowd! Remember, every single judge scoring you on tryout day has been in your shoes. They've all had many auditions, and they've all messed up. The judges can totally relate to tryout jitters, and they are routing for you to do you BEST!
All dance team members are required to attend summer choreography days. These dates will be listed in your tryout packet.
Dance team members are responsible for all costume fees for competition costumes, summer clinic fee, shoes, poms, team-ware, and other personal items.
We are a competitive dance team with membership in the Illinois Drill Team Association. We have qualified for the IDTA State Competition three of the last four years. Our dance team performs at most home girls' basketball games and all home boys' games. In addition, we have a Dance Team Clinic Fundraiser in November for which attendance is mandatory.
We perform several different types of dance including jazz, hip-hop, pom/dance, lyrical, and contemporary. Mandatory practices are held from 3:00-5:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and some Fridays. There is also a possibility of some Saturday practices and morning/before school practices.
As set forth by the District #69 Board of Education, students may only participate in ONE sport per season. For that reason, any girl who becomes a dance team member may not tryout for, or participate in, girls' basketball, softball, volleyball, or cheer-leading.
All dance team members must meet weekly academic eligibility requirements as stated in the student handbook. In addition, if a dance team member is excused from PE for any medical reason, she is not allowed to practice or perform. If a team member is absent from school, she is unable to perform the day of the absence.
